In a move that highlights their ongoing partnership, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Katsina State Government on Thursday, April 10, 2025, signed a new three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at improving the lives of children and women across the state.

Speaking on behalf of UNICEF Nigeria’s Country Representative, Rahama Rihood Mohammed Farah, Dr. Sereke Seyoum Deres, Health Officer at UNICEF Kano, explained that the new MoU outlines strategies to advance healthcare, nutrition, education, sanitation, child protection, and support for vulnerable populations.

Dr. Sereke commended the administration of Governor Malam Dikko Umar Radda for its commitment and support to UNICEF-led programmes, especially in sectors crucial to the well-being of women and children. “This framework is more than just a document—it reflects a shared vision and commitment to ensuring a better quality of life for every child in Katsina State,” he stated.

He urged the state government to increase domestic investment in areas such as healthcare, nutrition, hygiene, and child protection to reduce dependence on external aid. He also praised the implementation of the HADACA MSH health initiative as a model of excellence.

Dr. Sereke further stressed the need to sustain efforts to eradicate polio and ensure every child is vaccinated. He called on government officials, traditional leaders, and religious figures to take a stand against vaccine hesitancy.

Governor Dikko Radda reaffirmed his administration’s prioritization of education and healthcare, revealing that over N120 billion has been invested in constructing and renovating more than 500 schools, training teachers, and providing scholarships and support to students and youths.

In the health sector, the governor noted that the state received advanced medical equipment—including MRI and CT scanners—from World Medical Relief and Project Bio USA. The government has also introduced an electronic health records (EHR) system and biometric attendance monitoring for health workers.

Additionally, over 150 primary healthcare centres have been upgraded with clean water, solar electricity, and tricycle ambulances. The state, in collaboration with UNICEF and GAVI, distributed 361 motorcycles to support immunization campaigns across Katsina.

Governor Radda pledged continued support for the implementation of the MoU, stating, “This is our responsibility—not just aid. The best way to show appreciation is to ensure it succeeds.”

UNICEF reiterated its commitment to supporting the Katsina State Government in ensuring every child has access to quality life and fulfillment of their rights.
